[the square] is a community-oriented music studio in downtown Portland offering subsidized recording sessions & internships for students, in partnership with nonprofit Equal Measure Arts. Their programs prioritize hands-on experience, mentorship, and career exploration for aspiring engineers, producers, and musicians.

[the square] is also the downtown home of Monaco Studios & Equal Measure Arts, providing accessible recording time for emerging musicians as well as educational programs for students interested in becoming audio engineers & producers. 10% of all studio bookings & memberships support financial aid for under-resourced artists.

Founded in 2024, Equal Measure Arts' mission is to make professional studio recording & audio engineering training more accessible to aspiring recording artists and producers, regardless of age, resources, or experience. The organization aims to diversify the stories and voices represented in Maine’s music industry and train the next generation of music producers & engineers.
With community fundraising support, Equal Measure Arts has recorded over 50 songs with subsidized studio time for students and under-resourced musicians, racking up 221,000 streams and counting.
